Black Moon Made is the work/play of me, Chelcie Blackmun. I am an artist, learning herbalist, witch and wannabe psychedelic priestess. I am a maker of many things.
I focus my creative energies through art and herbalism. I am called to art-making and herb lore, both are spiritual practices for me. I can't set down one for the other anymore than I can set aside half myself. The plants and tradition of herbalism are my muse and inspiration in art, the art making then becomes my act of devotion. They are my ritual magic and worship of the natural world.
When making art I play with drawing, painting, print-making, and tattooing with seasonal forays into fiber crafts like knitting. I also work as a graphic designer and illustrator. I love making art and images as food for the soul and psyche, as ritual markers and non-verbal articulations of insights uncovered. I find great satisfaction in making items of practical use as well. Knowing that an object will serve a purpose in addition to being well crafted and beautiful sets my mind at ease. I love reusing and repurposing materials. Waste sucks.
I consider myself an herbalist vulgaris - vulgaris is a Latin word meaning "common" or "of the commom people", it is found in the botanical names of many weedy and useful plants. I am a common herbalist. I use my knowledge to care for myself and my loved ones, with any surplus offered to the greater community. I have studied in the Wise Woman tradition and hold nourishment, flexibility, respect, and simplicity as the pillars of my craft. I work with plants that are close to me and common, that I live with and have taken the time to develop relationship with. I source my potion ingredients by wildcrafting, gardening, and purchasing from responsible local herbalists. I am forever learning from the plants and people around me.
